Positioned in the heart of Jackson Hole, facing the lofty peak of Snow King Mountain, Stags Landing is a sophisticated new space that has been years in the making. This multi-purpose, 25,000 square-foot structure houses the working headquarters of the WRJ design firm, whose team also carried out the interior design. Hailed as “the most ambitious and significant achievement in Jackson Hole in over 30 years” (Homestead, 2024), it encompasses a ‘designer showhouse’ studio, office space and a four-story, four-bedroom private residence. Other spaces of note include an elegant reception area adjoining a courtyard – ideal for both indoor and outdoor events – and a dedicated art gallery. Anchoring the corner of Willow and King Streets, the structure also overlooks the scenic southern slopes of the Snow King Resort.
An admirer of Edwin Lutyens, our client requested that the European design principles of symmetry, proportion and balance be taken into consideration, so that the building could evoke a sense of harmony.
The rugged local architecture of Jackson Hole and Mountain West was also integral to the design inspiration. The exterior is crafted with rustic masonry and reclaimed wood cladding, creating the illusion of a building much older than it is. Inside, soaring vaulted ceilings are set off by reclaimed timber beams. Stags Landing looks particularly inviting on cold, snowy winter nights, illuminated by a warm glow from within.
The lofty double-height studio creates a sense of drama with colossal reclaimed wooden beams that cap its vaulted peaks, creating a striking backdrop for a contemporary chandelier fixture. Sculptural elements enhance the design’s sophisticated tone, such as the sweeping helical plaster stair, illuminated by both concealed and featured lighting. Another example is the glass-and-steel stair of the headquarters, positioned in front of a double-height glazed wall so that passersby can admire it as they walk past. What’s more, guests to Stags Landing can enjoy the luxury of its ski-in, ski-out design.
Stags Landing was a highly collaborative project. Having previously designed the WRJ co-founders’ personal residence, it was a pleasure to resume our rewarding working relationship with the firm. Now open to WRJ clients, partners, artists and visitors alike, the new building stands as both a living design concept and a multisensory testament to the refined work of its owners.
